ADD/ADHD

Abstract Brain Design

Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Naturopathic medicine offers a whole-person approach to supporting individuals with ADHD and ADD by exploring underlying factors that may be contributing to attention, focus, and regulation challenges.

Care often includes assessing for potential nutrient deficiencies through functional lab testing, supporting brain and nervous system health through personalized supplementation, and providing nutrition and lifestyle guidance to help optimize memory, attention, and focus.

Supporting focus, regulation, and nervous system balance.

Key Areas Assessed:

  • Attention challenges, behavioural changes, emotional regulation, learning difficulties, recurrent infections, tics, anxiety, and/or regression

  • Review of diet, nutrition, and blood sugar stability

  • Timeline of symptoms, noting sudden onset versus gradual changes

  • Stress response and nervous system regulation

  • Neurodevelopmental patterns, including social engagement, sensory sensitivities, communication, and executive function

  • Behavioural and emotional regulation, including mood, anxiety, irritability, and stress tolerance

  • Gastrointestinal health, recognizing the gut–brain connection

  • Sleep quality and routines

  • Environmental exposures, including household toxins and allergens

  • Medication and supplement history, including stimulant medications, antibiotics, or psychiatric supports

  • Family history of neurodevelopmental, autoimmune, or mental health condition

Functional Testing

  • Nutrient status, such as iron status, zinc, vitamin D, and B vitamins

  • Blood sugar and metabolic function

  • Markers of inflammation or immune activation

  • Gut health and microbiome balance, given the gut–brain immune relationship

  • Food sensitivities or immune-mediated reactions

  • Methylation and Toxicity testing, including organic acid test (OAT), heavy metals, and GI-MAP

  • Neurotransmitter testing

Individualized Treatment Plan

  • Personalized nutrition strategies to support stable blood sugar, brain development, immune regulation, and reduce inflammation

  • Targeted botanical and nutraceutical supplementation to address deficiencies and enter optimal ranges

  • Gut health support, focusing on digestion, microbiome balance, and nutrient absorption

  • Immune modulation strategies, particularly in post-infectious or inflammatory presentation

  • Sleep optimization, including routines and circadian rhythm support

  • Environmental modifications to help reduce exposure to potential triggers

  • Parent education and coaching, empowering caregivers with tools and understanding

  • Collaborative care, working alongside pediatricians, developmental specialists, psychologists, and speech and occupational therapists

  • Ongoing monitoring and adjustment, ensuring care evolves with your child’s needs
