Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Whole-person support for neurodivergent individuals

ASD is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, behaviour, emotional regulation, daily functioning, sensory and motor processing in both children and adults. Research shows there is influence from nutritional status, metabolic health, inflammation, gut–brain communication, and nervous system regulation on overall health patterns and symptom expression.

My approach focuses on identifying individual biochemical and nutritional needs, including potential nutrient deficiencies that may affect brain function, energy, focus, and mood. Through personalized nutrition and lifestyle guidance, along with evidence-based supplements and botanical medicine, care is designed to support cognitive function, emotional regulation, sleep, and stress resilience.

Naturopathic care is not intended as a “quick fix,” but as a thoughtful, ongoing process tailored to the individual and their existing therapies. Treatment addresses the underlying medical factors associated with ASD and may support improved quality of life, along with greater opportunities for communication, social connection, and learning.

Key Areas Assessed:

  • Primary concerns, such as attention challenges, behavioral changes, emotional regulation, learning difficulties, sleep issues, recurrent infections, tics, anxiety, or regression

  • Developmental history, including pregnancy, birth, early milestones, and early childhood health

  • Timeline of symptoms, noting sudden onset versus gradual changes

  • Neurodevelopmental patterns, including social engagement, sensory sensitivities, communication, and executive function

  • Behavioral and emotional regulation, including mood, anxiety, irritability, and stress tolerance

  • Immune and infection history, including frequent illnesses, strep exposure, or post-infectious changes

  • Gastrointestinal health, recognizing the gut–brain connection

  • Dietary patterns and nutritional intake, including picky eating, food sensitivities, and appetite changes

  • Sleep quality and routines

  • Environmental exposures, including household toxins and allergens

  • Medication and supplement history, including stimulant medications, antibiotics, or psychiatric supports

  • Family history of neurodevelopmental, autoimmune, or mental health conditions

Functional Testing

  • Nutrient status, such as iron status, zinc, vitamin D, and B vitamins

  • Markers of inflammation or immune activation, especially in suspected PANS/PANDAS

  • Evidence of recent or chronic infections, when clinically indicated such as Lyme, yeast, mold GI-MAP stool tests

  • Gut health and microbiome balance, given the gut–brain immune relationship

  • Food sensitivities or immune-mediated reactions

  • Methylation and Toxicity testing, including organic acid test (OAT), heavy metals, yeast testing and GI-MAP

  • Neurotransmitter testing

Individualized Treatment Plan

  • Personalized nutrition strategies to support stable blood sugar, brain development, and immune regulation

  • Targeted botanical and nutraceutical supplementation to address deficiencies and enter optimal range

  • Gut health support, focusing on digestion, microbiome balance, and nutrient absorption

  • Immune modulation strategies, particularly in post-infectious or inflammatory presentation

  • Sleep optimization, including routines and circadian rhythm support

  • Environmental modifications to help reduce exposure to potential triggers

  • Parent education and coaching, empowering caregivers with tools and understanding

  • Collaborative care, working alongside pediatricians, developmental specialists, psychologists, and speech and occupational therapists

  • Ongoing monitoring and adjustment, ensuring care evolves with your child’s needs
