Sleep and Stress

Sleep and Stress

Rest plays an important role in productivity, and sleep is a vital part of health. Together, they support balance, resilience, and well-being.

Chronic stress and poor sleep can quietly impact nearly every system in the body from immune and hormonal balance to digestion, mood, and cardiovascular health.

During sleep, particularly deep (slow-wave) sleep the body releases growth hormone, which plays a critical role in tissue repair, muscle recovery, metabolic regulation, and immune function. This stage of sleep supports essential restorative processes that can't fully occur during lighter stages of sleep.

Sleep cycles through both light and deep stages, as well as REM sleep, each serving a unique purpose for physical recovery, memory consolidation, and nervous system regulation. Most adults require 7–9 hours of sleep per night, while children, teenagers, and older adults may need more or slightly less depending on age and individual needs. Chronic stress can disrupt these sleep stages, reducing deep sleep and impairing the body’s ability to restore and regulate itself.

Common conditions I support: trouble falling and/or staying asleep, adrenal fatigue/burnout, post-viral fatigue (i.e. EBV, COVID-19, Influenza), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and cortisol dysregulation

Key Areas Assessed:

  • Primary concerns and symptom patterns, such as frequent infections, allergies, asthma, eczema, joint pain, fatigue, brain fog, or systemic inflammation

  • Timeline of immune symptoms, including onset, severity, frequency, flares, and remission patterns

  • History of infections, antibiotic use, and immune challenges

  • Autoimmune or inflammatory diagnoses, including family history of immune-mediated conditions

  • Allergy and hypersensitivity patterns, including food, environmental, and chemical triggers

  • Gut health history, given the strong gut–immune connection

  • Hormonal and adrenal function

  • Stress response, sleep patterns, and nervous system regulation, assessing immune resilience and recovery

  • Medication and supplement history, including immunosuppressants, biologics, corticosteroids, or antihistamines

  • Environmental and lifestyle exposures, such as mold, pollutants, occupational hazards, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals that may be impacting rest and recovery

  • Mental and emotional load contributing to rest and recovery impairments

Functional Testing

  • Blood sugar and insulin regulation, including fasting glucose, insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and C-peptide

  • Salivary or serum cortisol and DHEA for adrenal function

  • Thyroid panel to assess metabolism and energy regulation

  • Nutrient status (magnesium, B-vitamins, iron) impacting energy and nervous system support

  • Inflammatory markers and oxidative stress indicators

  • Markers of immune activation or suppression

  • Autoimmune screening markers

  • Allergy or sensitivity testing, to identify immune-mediated triggers

  • Gut-related testing, including microbiome balance, permeability, and immune interactions

  • Infectious burden, when chronic or recurrent infections are suspected

Individualized Treatment Plan

  • Lifestyle strategies to support circadian rhythm, relaxation, and restorative sleep

  • Targeted nutrition to stabilize energy, support adrenal function, and reduce inflammation

  • Botanical and nutraceutical support, including immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, or adaptogenic nutrients carefully chosen for safety, evidence, and tolerability

  • Stress reduction techniques, including mindfulness, breathing exercises, and nervous system regulation

  • Ongoing monitoring and adjustment, with a focus on pacing to ensure care evolves with your energy and stress needs

  • Lifestyle interventions, emphasizing stress management, sleep quality, gentle movement, and nervous system regulation

  • Trigger identification and avoidance strategies, including environmental and dietary modifications

  • Collaborative care, working alongside conventional providers for autoimmune or inflammatory disease management

  • Carefully paced and adaptive treatment, focusing on restoring immune balance safely and gradually.
