Digestive Health

The gut as your second brain.

Supporting digestive health at its root can positively impact the entire body, not just the gut.

The digestive system encompasses organs involved in both detoxification and the elimination of metabolic waste. When the body cannot process and eliminate waste effectively, various health problems may follow.

The gut has its own nervous system, known as the enteric nervous system (ENS), which allows it to function independently by regulating digestion, motility, and blood flow while constantly communicating with the brain through the gut-brain axis. This connection involves nerves, hormones, immune signals, and the gut microbiome. In fact, the majority of key neurotransmitters that influence mood, sleep, and emotional balance such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA are produced and regulated in the gut.

When the microbiome is imbalanced, research has linked this to digestive issues as well as anxiety, depression, IBS, low mood, brain fog, and increased inflammation. Because the gut and brain are so closely connected, digestive dysfunction can affect mental and emotional health, just as stress can disrupt digestion and immune function.

Common digestive concerns I support: diarrhea, constipation, belching, gas, bloating, acid reflux, heartburn, food sensitivities, gall stones, IBS/IBD, celiac disease, crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulosis/diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, ulcers, SIBO.

Key Areas Assessed:

  • Timeline of symptoms, identifying triggers, progression, and previous treatments

  • Dietary patterns, food quality, timing, and hydration

  • Stress, sleep, adrenal function, and lifestyle factors, recognizing the gut–brain connection

  • Medication and supplement history, including antibiotics, NSAIDs, PPIs, and hormonal therapies

  • Past medical history, infections, surgeries, and trauma

  • Family history of GI, autoimmune, metabolic, or inflammatory conditions

Functional Testing

When clinically indicated, functional and conventional testing is used to evaluate immune activity, inflammatory burden, and contributing physiological imbalances. Testing is selected based on clinical presentation and individual risk factors. Testing may include comprehensive stool and microbiome analysis, SIBO breath testing, assessment of food sensitivities, and evaluation of digestive function such as enzyme activity and stomach acid status.

Common areas evaluated may include:

  • Inflammatory markers, to assess systemic and tissue-level inflammation

  • Immune system activity and regulation, including markers of immune activation or suppression

  • Autoimmune screening markers for conditions such as celiac disease

  • Allergy or food sensitivity testing, to identify immune-mediated triggers

  • GI-MAP stool testing, including microbiome balance, permeability, and immune interactions

  • Nutrient status, particularly nutrients critical for immune regulation and defense

  • Infectious burden, when chronic or recurrent infections are suspected

  • SIBO testing

Individualized Treatment Plan

An individualized treatment plan is developed to support long term immune regulation, reduce chronic inflammation, and strengthen overall resilience, while respecting the protective role of the immune system. My goal is to reduce symptom burden while supporting overall health and quality of life.

Treatment plans may include:

  • Personalized anti-inflammatory nutrition strategies, tailored to immune tolerance and symptom triggers

  • Targeted supplementation, including immune-modulating nutrients, prebiotics, and probiotics

  • Botanical medicine, selected for immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, gut lining repair, or adaptogenic effects

  • Gut-focused therapies, supporting barrier integrity and microbiome balance

  • Lifestyle interventions, emphasizing stress management, sleep quality, movement, and nervous system regulation

  • Choosing low-irritant, hypoallergenic household and personal care products, which can help minimize ongoing immune activation

  • Trigger identification and avoidance strategies, including environmental and dietary modifications

  • Collaborative care, working alongside conventional providers for autoimmune or inflammatory disease management
